Environment and Carbon Management

In the past few years, the environment has emerged as a core business issue. Leading companies are working to reduce their environmental impact and leverage the opportunity to increase efficiency, deepen employee and stakeholder engagement, enhance their brand and reduce costs across the organization.

One of the most pressing corporate responsibility issues today, having economic, social and environmental implications, is climate change – and more specifically, the management of an organization’s CO2e (“carbon”) emissions.

In order for a company to approach carbon management strategically and integrate it into its overall CSR framework, an assessment of risks and opportunities needs to be undertaken and a baseline needs to be established.

From this baseline, your organization can then identify the key drivers for your footprint and prioritize areas for the short- and long-term reduction planning. Engaging employees and suppliers in implementing reduction measures, tracking progress, and continually improving performance are core components of this approach.

CBSR works with partner organizations such as Pinchin Environmental and CarbonCounted to deliver carbon footprint assessments and tools for managing carbon in the supply chain, using widely accepted international standards for GHG emissions accounting and reporting. CBSR has engaged individual organizations as well as industry-wide groups of companies to measure and reduce their carbon footprint, and communicate their climate change programs to key stakeholders. 

While a carbon footprint focuses specifically on measuring an organization’s CO2e  emissions,  it also acts as a basis for further assessment of other environmental aspects, including waste generation, water consumption and material usage. A similar baseline assessment approach could be extended to other components of your organization’s overall environmental footprint to fully understand your risks and opportunities related to the environment.

In addition to delivering baseline assessments, CBSR offers candid counsel on reduction strategies, navigating the range of options for carbon offsetting, and integrating carbon management into an organizations CSR reporting and other forms of disclosure.  CBSR also advises companies on reducing CO2e emissions in their supply chains and developing industry-specific approaches to carbon management.
