CSR Reflections - Best Of 2011 And What To Expect For 2012

CBSR had the pleasure of having Toby Webb, Founder and Chairman of Ethical Corporation, take part in our recent webinar to share his reflections on some of the big Corporate Responsibility (CR) issues of 2011 and the trends we should expect moving forward into 2012. The reflections are based on multitude of discussions and interviews with executives around the world.

Toby covered global and regional trends that impact CR; as well as business specific practices and predictions. Among some of the largest trends on a global scale Toby cited are:

7 billion global population and increased resource use has become a powerful impetus to the sustainability movement
China’s five year plan and the rising impact of 400 million strong middle class
Fukushima’s negative impact on nuclear as transition technology to mitigate GHG emissions.
Occupy movement discourse that encapsulated global sentiment that the current system of liberal democracy and capitalism is not working.

At a corporate level, he cited:

• Shift to a holistic and all-encompassing sustainability commitments and strategy amongst big brand leaders
• Need for IT industry to engage more holistically in sustainability and ethics – currently under scrutiny on both operations and consumer influence
Ruggie’s report on business and human rights provides a robust and solutions-oriented framework that mining and oil and gas companies need to be aware of and comply with
Energy, carbon and water have become top areas of disclosure.
